6 Ways to Speed Up Your Dance Progress
Step One: Wear a Swarovski Crystal Latin dress and fish nets 24/7…. We are totally joking!!!
Learning to dance is going to benefit your mind and body so, naturally anyone wanting to improve their dancing is probably wanting to speed up their progress. Here are some simple ways to do so; and what better time to try amping up your learning than during Festival!
1. Try a Double Lesson
Instead of giving your body and mind only 45 minutes to learn something new, why not give yourself 90 minutes; It could be the difference between feeling uncomfortable or the feeling of gliding on the dance floor with a major breakthrough. By having a double lesson, you are allowing time for your body to warm up, learn something new and then practice, practice, practice. By giving yourself more time on your lesson you provide yourself with the opportunity to enter into that “magic zone” where everything just seems to fall into place. The longer you can spend in that zone the greater the level of improvement.
2. Use your Group Classes
Attending a group class once or twice a week is a great way to practice your dancing, even if the group class is focused on a different step or idea to what you are learning in your private lessons. At Arthur Murray one thing you learn in one dance is guaranteed to help you in another so, whether you are thinking about your frame or footwork, just being in the dance studio is going to help you on your way.
3. Reschedule your Schedule
Just like when your favourite TV series only shows one episode a week, you’ve got to try and remember what happened in last week’s episode so that you can keep up to date each week; Same goes for your dance lessons. Try booking a “Bootcamp” with two lessons a week for one month. Your muscle memory will improve and your mind will retain more information with less time in between “episodes.”
4. Try an Exchange Lesson
Here at Arthur Murray Inner West all of our teachers are bursting at the seams with knowledge. Think of us as your personal team of teachers, working together to help you succeed. Sometimes another teacher saying something in a slightly different way might just flick the switch to your light bulb moment.
5. If You Have a Computer You Have a Lesson
Oh no! Snap lock down or the babysitter has cancelled. Don’t worry! There is no need to cancel your lesson, just convert it to a zoom lesson. It is crazy how far technology has come and now there is no excuse to not be dancing!!!!
6. Film Your Lesson
Just like in point 5, technology is so good these days and basically everyone’s mobile phone has a camera, so on your next lesson set up your camera and record some of your dancing. You’ll be surprised at what actually seeing your dancing will do for you! It might feel a little weird to see yourself dancing but, you’ll be able to see what your teacher is saying, one thing that I always find helpful is no matter where I am or what I’m doing if I can watch my dancing and just think about it for 5-10 minutes when I’m outside the studio its easier for me to remember something new or remind me of something I need to practice.
If speeding up the progress of your dancing is something that you have thinking about, that means you are ready to take the next step! Talk to your teacher on your next lesson so that you can make the best plan of attack! See you on the dance floor!
